New Zealand teaching is active and practical: lectures build the foundation, while tutorials, labs and project work bring smaller groups together for discussion and direct contact with teaching staff. You will be expected to think independently, ask questions and apply what you learn. Wellbeing is treated as part of the study experience too. Plan your living costs

Build a city-specific budget before choosing a campus. Nau Mai NZ’s current annual planning benchmarks are NZD 20,000–27,000 for Auckland and Wellington, around NZD 20,000 for Hamilton and Christchurch, and NZD 18,000–21,000 for Dunedin. The items included can differ by university, so compare the latest provider budget with your own habits. These estimates do not replace Immigration New Zealand’s current requirement to show NZD 20,000 for each year of tertiary study. As a national guide, accommodation can start near NZD 140 a week for a room in a shared house and reach about NZD 484 for a catered hall; basic groceries are commonly budgeted at NZD 100–150 a week, while individual public transport fares can range from NZD 1.40 to NZD 9 depending on the city and journey.

Halls of residence are usually the easiest first landing: they are arranged through the education provider, close to campus and often include utilities, with meals included in catered options. Homestays add day-to-day support with a local household. Private flatting offers more independence, but you will normally manage the bond, rent, power, internet, furniture and commuting yourself. Apply early for halls and compare the full cost, not rent alone.

Working while you study

Eligible tertiary students can work part-time for up to 25 hours a week while studying. Full-time work may be allowed during scheduled study breaks and the Christmas and New Year holiday period when the course and visa conditions qualify. Your eVisa is the final word, so check it before accepting a job. Part-time income can add experience and ease everyday costs, but it should support a sound study budget rather than replace one.
